Masters Campus-Based Team Internship

The Masters Campus-based Team Internship - Engineering (MCTI) is a work experience opportunity for Postgraduate Taught students in the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences.

MCTI is a high-impact, on-campus internship designed exclusively for Postgraduate Taught students in the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences. You'll partner up with Severn Trent Water, local leaders in the utilities industry, tackle a genuine sector-based challenge, and collaborate in a dynamic, interdisciplinary team to craft solutions. Student teams will present their solution to a panel of judges, who will announce a winner and award them a prize! 

Please note this programme is only open to students from specific Schools and will be exclusively delivered on campus. Participation in the MCTI programme contributes towards the Birmingham Award.

 

Who can take part?

MCTI is open to Postgraduate Taught students from the following schools in EPS:

  • Chemical Engineering
  • Chemistry
  • Computer Science
  • Engineering

Please note that MCTI is only open to Postgraduate Taught students undertaking a degree on the University's Edgbaston Campus, where all sessions will take place in-person. Registered Distance Learners may take part in MCTI, but they must be able to commit to attending all sessions in-person.

What's the time commitment?

MCTI sessions are provisionally scheduled for:

  • Wednesday 4th February, 14:00-16:00: Welcome Session and Employer Brief
  • Wednesday 18th Februrary, 14:00-16:00: Ideation and Teamwork Skills
  • Wednesday 4th March, 14:00-16:00: Employer Check-In Session
  • Wednesday 18th March, 14:00-16:00: Presentation Skills
  • Wednesday 29th April, 14:00-17:00: Final Presentations

Please note that all sessions will take place in-person on the Edgbaston Campus and that attendance at all sessions is compulsory.

In addition to these sessions, teams will be expected to spend approximately 2-3 hours per week working on their solutions  to the challenge.

  • Receive a certificate of participation, co-signed by both the University of Birmingham and Severn Trent Water.
  • Have MCTI added to your enhanced degree transcript.
  • Undertake meaningful work experience that can be used as an example in future job applications and interviews.

How do I apply?

Applications will open at 9am on 24th November 2025 and will close on 18th January 2026 at 11:45pm.

Places for MCTI are limited and will be allocated depending on the quality of your application. Please complete the application form in full and answer the questions to the best of your ability.
