Careers Network Mentoring Scheme
Business Management with Marketing, 2022

Please tell us a bit about yourself, your mentorship and what you gained from taking part in the mentoring scheme.

My name is Ansa Shaheen, I'm a final Year Business Management with Marketing student. I took part in the Mentoring Scheme to enhance skills and behaviours for recruitment process and to gain industry knowledge for my year in industry. I was paired with an Alumni Relations Manager at the University of Birmingham.

My personal goal was to gain confidence for upcoming interviews, therefore the majority of the meetings focused on building interview skills through practicing questions and gaining feedback. The meetings were all held online due to COVID, but this was really helpful as my interviews were all online. We decided on meeting prior to any interviews I had so I could go through any questions.

What is one piece of advice you got from your mentor?

One piece of advice I got was to invest my time wisely, if you want something, focus your attention on that to ensure you are doing your best to achieve your goals.

Can you share any top tips for making the most of the mentoring opportunity?

My top tip would be to not hesitate about what you are hoping to achieve from the mentoring, more than likely they will be able help, if not they will know someone who can help.

Why would you recommend the mentoring scheme to other students?

As part of my third-year plans, I was hoping to do a year in industry, but I was not getting a lot of positive response. I applied for the Mentoring Scheme during this time because I was looking to gain interview skills from someone in the industry. I gained more confidence for an upcoming interview after working with my mentor, which resulted in me being successful for the position. It is highly recommended that you take advantage of the Mentoring Scheme; whatever your goals are for this year or the next, a mentor can provide you with support and assistance.
