Student Spotlight - Alistair McVey

Welcome to our second Student Spotlight in our BurnFM takeover, featuring Alistair McVey, LES student in the School of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation Sciences.

I’m Alistair and I’ve always had a keen interest in sports media, particularly radio and podcasts. I’ve always enjoyed listening to people discuss sporting topics, and that inspired me to get involved myself. After joining UOB in September, I discovered Burn FM during Freshers’ Week and saw it as a great opportunity to gain experience working in a studio and talking about sport.

I’m now Deputy Head of Sport, co-hosting a weekly Monday 7–8pm sports show where we discuss major sporting headlines, different topics and a weekly quiz, as well as a new football show, Between the Lines, on Tuesdays 4–5pm. People should tune in for informed discussion and opinionated debate across a wide range of sporting topics.

One of the things I enjoy most is planning topics and researching sports I might not usually follow, as well as having lively debates on controversial football opinions. Being involved with radio has really helped build my confidence in day-to-day life and has also developed my initiative, particularly when it comes to planning shows and leading discussions. It's something I’d definitely like to pursue in the future, particularly with organisations like The Athletic, who produce some of my favourite podcasts.
