The University Graduate School (UGS) at the University of Birmingham is working with the Birmingham International Academy (BIA) to deliver a 5-week series of workshops: Academic English Skills for PGRs.

The course consists of five stand-alone workshop style sessions and is for University of Birmingham postgraduate researchers (PGRs - Mres/PhD/MPhil) of any discipline, who have English as an additional language.

In-person or online?

You are looking at the in-person version of this event, we also offer this session online – see our other listings here.

We are offering each session in-person on main campus Mondays 4-6pm, and again online Tuesdays 1-3pm.

What are the workshop outcomes?

The overarching aim of the course is to help PGRs to reflect on the challenges faced by research students common to various disciplines at different stages of the thesis writing process.

Sessions are led by an experienced BIA Academic English tutor who will provide tips and strategies, whilst facilitating the sharing of experience and resources among the international PGR community.

By attending 'Avoiding plagiarism (paraphrasing, summarising, synthesising)', you will be better able to:

  • Recognise the risks of poor academic practice and the benefits of appropriate synthesis of sources using a variety of writing strategies (e.g. paraphrase and summary)

Who is this workshop series for?
