The University Graduate School presents a new series 'UGS Talks' -  bringing UoB’s postgraduate community together with a range of thought-provoking talks and the chance to get to know each other, whatever your discipline might be. 

Introduced by senior academic staff, these interdisciplinary talks are a chance to enhance your postgraduate network and hear about current UoB research, future pathways, and real-world impact.

If you’re a postgraduate thinking ahead to your career in industry or academia, want to enhance your academic and social networks, or simply fancy a break from work with an afternoon of thought-provoking talks and conversation, this event is not to be missed! Join UGS Talks for fascinating insights into life after postgraduate study. Introduced by the University Provost and Vice-Principal, Professor Tim Jones and Dean of Postgraduates, Professor Duncan shepherd. Followed by talks from Birmingham postgraduate alumni, sharing the journeys of their careers: the highs and lows, the vital skills they learnt as postgraduates, and their advice to those graduating into a post-COVID world.

Our postgraduate alumni speakers: 

Harvinder Atwal is Chief Data Scientist at the Money Supermarket Group, a British price comparison website-based business specialising in financial services. Harvinder has been named a Corinium Global Top 100 Innovator in Data & Analytics and a Top 100 Asian Stars in UK Tech 2021. Harvinder studied for an MSc in Operational Research at the University of Birmingham.

Henrietta Brealey is Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce (GBCC), a not-for-profit business membership and support organisation that exists to Connect, Support & Grow local businesses. Appointed at age 30, she is the youngest CEO in the organisation’s 208-year history. Henrietta has been named as one of Birmingham Live’s ‘30 under 30’ in 2019, as well as a BusinessLive ‘35 under 35’ in 2021. Henrietta studied for a MSc in Public Management from the College of Social Sciences at University of Birmingham.

UGS Talks - Cake, Coffee and Conversation

Choose a 'cake, coffee and conversation' ticket to join us either before or after the main event for  friendly networking over coffee and cake: share your subject passion, your current projects and your future plans with our interdisciplinary postgraduate community.We'll also have an array of University services on hand to answer your questions and help you explore everything on offer to you as a postgraduate at Birmingham. Whether you're looking for ways to enhance your research profile, prepare a PhD application, hone your academic skillset, or polish your CV, our services are here to support your postgraduate journey and life beyond. Come and chat to us and learn how to make the most of your time here.

Covid-19

Please be reassured that we have planned our capacity carefully, to allow additional space between attendees in the Bramall Hall. In line with government guidance published on 4th January, we ask that face coverings are worn throughout the event, unless you are exempt or eating and drinking. Any staff or students who are exempt are welcome to collect a sunflower lanyard from the Aston Webb student hub. Disposable face coverings will be available if you forget to bring one. We also ask all attendees to take a lateral flow test before attending the event and request you not to attend if you are feeling unwell, have any symptoms or a positive lateral flow result. We will update this information if guidance changes and also provide more detailed information to attendees ahead of the event.

Who is this event for?

This event is open to all current University of Birmingham postgraduates (postgraduate taught and postgraduate research). 

PGR programmes include: MPhil, MMus, MRes, MA by Research, MSc by Research, MLitt, PhD, PhD with integrated study, EngD, DDS, MD, Higher doctorates and Professional doctorates.

PGT programmes include: MA, MSc, MBA, MEd, LLM, MPH, Maths SKE, MPA, PG Affiliate, PG Certificate, PG Dip Ed, PG Diploma, and PGCE.
