This hands-on public engagement and video editing workshop is designed to train PGRs in producing short video essays about their research that are accessible to non-academic audiences. No previous experience is required!

Held in collaboration between the University Graduate School and Digital and Media Technicians from the Department of Film and Creative Writing, this 2-hour workshop will guide attendees through the process of scripting a short video essay, and using video editing software to make this clear, accessible, and engaging. PGRs who have submitted their thesis, or are intending to do so within the next 12 months, can apply the skills they have learned to take part in the Birmingham PhD Video Abstracts project.

Why join us? As a result of the workshop, you will:

  • Consider the difference between written essays and video essays
  • Begin to develop skills in communication and public engagement
  • Learn how to frame and word academic research for a non-academic audience
  • Develop your skills in video editing
  • Gain valuable experience in public engagement that can be included on your C.V.
  • Have prepared yourself to take part in the Birmingham PhD Video Abstracts project.

Please note that attendees must bring with them piece of writing that is approximately 500 words long (e.g., their thesis abstract, part of a conference paper, or whatever you're currently working on!, as well as a laptop that they are happy to download some free video editing software to. Don't have a laptop? You can borrow one from the library.
