Postgrad Highlights of UoBe Festival 2023

UoBe festival begins next week, 23-27 January 2023, with five days covering five themes of activities: Community, Varsity, Skills, Social and Wellbeing. It’s a great opportunity to develop skills, create memories, and unwind as Semester One comes to a close.

There is plenty going on for postgraduates, including our flagship UGS Talks! Here’s our University Graduate School round-up of events we are particularly looking forward to, online and in-person. There were many we couldn’t include – make sure you check out the UoBe Festival website for a full view of everything going on next week. 1. UGS Talks: Inspiration from our Postgraduate Alumni

  • When: Thursday 26 January, 15:30-18:00

Starting our highlights list with one of the biggest postgraduate events of the year – UGS Talks: Inspiration from Our Postgraduate Alumni invites two UoB postgrad alumni to give talks in the Bramall Music Building sharing the journeys of their careers. Join for fascinating insights into life and career-building after postgraduate study: the highs and lows, the vital skills they learnt as postgraduates, and their advice to those graduating in the coming years.

2023’s speakers include research and innovation expert at UKRI, Dr. Sandeep Sandhu, and one of the most senior Black women in governance, Alethea Fuller, Deputy Chief Executive, West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner.

The talks are followed by a drinks reception, where you can connect with your postgraduate community and members of staff.

2. Research That Matters

An exciting opportunity to hear from a selection of key researchers at the University, such as How to Fix Environmentalism, Covid Realities, Fossil Vertebrate Evolution and The Wonderful Brain and What Happens When Things Go Wrong. All talks are designed for a non-specialist audience, to come along to learn something new, and all about some of the exciting and innovative research projects currently taking place at UoB.

3. Mental Health & Wellbeing Support for Over 25s

  • When: Tuesday 24 January, 13:00-16:00
  • Where: Room CM3, Medical School Building

This Mature Student Wellbeing Fair and afternoon of talks will cover what support is available to students over 25, with an insight into the mental health impact and wellbeing difficulties affecting mature students. Drop in to the fair and book a place at specific talks from Academic Skills and Wellbeing, (13:00), Better Than Well (13:30), the University's Mental Health & Wellbeing Team (14:00), and Addiction Support Services (14:30).

4. Online House of Hyde Wellbeing Seminars

Imposter Syndrome, Dissolving Self-Limiting Beliefs, Confidence Building

Goal Setting

We know many of you set New Years resolutions around confidence, productivity, and achieving your academic and research goals. Why not get a helping hand with some tricks and tips from the experts? House of Hyde’s online workshops show you the science behind self-limiting behaviour, and what you can do to break bad habits and meet your ambitions.

5. Postgraduate and Mature Student’s Social

Finish off the week with your postgraduate community! Meet new people ahead of the start of Semester Two in this friendly and informal setting.

6. Cultivating Confidence with Mary Adeyemi

  • When: Tuesday 24 January, 11:00-12:00

Mary Adeyemi is an award-winning investment professional with a long tenure working with global investment banks, and a current executive director at Goldman Sachs. In this session titled ‘Cultivating Confidence’, Mary Adeyemi will help you understand the forms of confidence and self-doubt and equip you with the tools to respond to those negative thoughts and voices so you can show up as your most confident self, every day.

8. International Students Social

At UoB, you’re part of a global postgraduate community, with students and researchers joining from all over the world. Join this friendly social for your chance to meet and get to know other international students. They’re even taking requests for international music!
