University Welcomes 125th Anniversary Scholars
The University of Birmingham is proud to announce the induction of the first cohort of the 125th Anniversary Scholars, a group of talented Black British researchers embarking on their PhD journeys this autumn. This groundbreaking initiative, launched in celebration of the University’s 125-year legacy, aims to empower and support Black postgraduate research students, addressing under-representation in academia and fostering a more inclusive educational environment.
The Scholars came together for an induction day on the 2nd October, where they enjoyed getting to know each other, and networking with supervisors. There were information sessions about funding arrangements, careers support, and opportunities for skills development and social events. It was an enjoyable day for all involved and helped get their PhD journey off to a great start.
A Milestone in Diversity and Inclusion
The 125th Anniversary Scholarships for Black British Researchers represent a significant step towards promoting diversity and inclusion within higher education. Alongside financial support including a generous stipend, paid tuition fees and a Research Training and Support Grant, Scholars will also have access to a mentorship scheme and development opportunities. They will be part of a vibrant research community and will form a network of Black British Scholars fostering collaboration, peer support, and a sense of belonging among Scholars, enhancing their academic experience and promoting mutual growth.
As the University of Birmingham celebrates its 125-year journey, the launch of this scholarship initiative marks a new chapter in its commitment to fostering diversity, inclusion, and academic excellence.
