Research Poster Competition

The annual Research Poster Competition is the largest postgraduate researcher event at the University, and part of the Postgraduate Research Festival. The competition gives researchers the opportunity to produce a research poster for a general audience, promote their research and meet other researchers. We give members of the public, postgraduate researchers and members of staff from across the University the opportunity to find out about the wealth of research that happens in Birmingham.

The next Research Poster Competition will take place at the Postgraduate Research Festival in June 2025. This page refers to the 2024 competition but should give you a good idea of what to expect.

We warmly welcome our postgraduate researchers from all Colleges (College of Arts and Law, College of Social Sciences, College of Engineering and Physical Sciences, College of Life and Environmental Sciences, College of Medical and Dental Sciences) to submit their abstracts for the Research Poster Competition, as part of the Postgraduate Reserach Festival. This interdisciplinary Festival is a good opportunity for postgraduate researchers to showcase their research, network with other researchers, enhance their skills and gain experience in presenting their research to non-specialists.

The Research Poster Competition asks postgraduate researchers (PGRs) to prepare an A1 poster about their doctoral research. We really want to celebrate the breadth of outstanding research undertaken by PGRs here at UoB, and so your poster does not have to conform to any particular theme - whether you're looking at diversity issues within the publishing industry, are conducting ground-breaking cancer research, or are disproving a centuries-old theorem, we would love to have you take part in the Research Poster Competition!

Eligibility for taking part in the Research Poster Competition

The Research Poster Competition is open to all postgraduate researchers (full-time, part-time, distance) who are currently registered at the University of Birmingham and are available to attend the Postgraduate Research Festival.

The Research Poster Competition is unfortunately not open to postgraduate taught students (Masters, PGCert, PGDip, etc.), but if you'd like the opportunity to think about your dissertation or assignments creatively and share your work, why not enter our sister competition The PGT Gallery, which also goes on display at the PG Festival?

How do I get involved?

If you're thinking about taking part, the first step is to register your interest here.

Once you've filled in an expression of interest form, you'll be automatically added to our Research Poster Competition Canvas page, which has all deadlines, information, resources for making your poster and guidance for sending a digital file of your poster it to us.

Once the deadline for sending your poster to the University Graduate School has passed (17 May 2024), we'll screen posters for any errors.

 What happens next?

If your poster is accepted for the Research Poster Competition, you will receive an email within two weeks after the deadline with further instructions on how to prepare for judging.

The University Graduate School will organise all final printing and hanging of the posters at the Festival.

Will there be any prizes for the Competition?
