The Multifaith Chaplaincy provides space for prayer, reflection, worship, and quiet study. All students and staff are welcome, whether you follow a faith tradition or none.
Based in St Francis Hall, next to the Guild of Students, the Chaplaincy supports the spiritual life, wellbeing, and sense of community across the University. The building is open for individual use and for organised activities.
Our History
The Multifaith Chaplaincy has been part of the University of Birmingham for decades, evolving in line with the changing needs of its student community. Originally established to support Christian worship on campus, it has grown into a fully multifaith service reflecting the University’s religious, cultural, and belief diversity.
Today, the Chaplaincy supports students and staff of all faiths and none, offering pastoral care, space for worship and reflection, and a platform for interfaith engagement. Its development reflects a wider shift in the University towards inclusion, dialogue, and community across difference.
To mark the University’s 125th anniversary, a dedicated feature explores this journey in more detail, highlighting key moments in the Chaplaincy’s transformation and the voices that have shaped it over time.

The Chaplaincy Today
Our chaplaincy team represents a range of faith traditions and offers pastoral support, spiritual guidance, and confidential conversation.
We run activity throughout the year, including regular worship and prayer, workshops, discussions, and interfaith events. We also mark major religious and cultural festivals, supporting shared learning and participation. We work closely with student-led faith societies, providing space for student-led prayer, meetings, and events.
The Chaplaincy forms part of the University’s wider support network, offering a practical and inclusive environment for care, community, and belonging.
