Union Black: Britain's Black cultures & steps to anti-racism

Enrol on a new free online course to learn more about black British history and black cultures in Britain.

UoB is pleased to support the launch of ‘Union Black - Britain’s Black cultures and steps to anti-racism’, a free online education programme for students and staff members, designed to drive cultural change across the Higher Education sector.

Developed by Santander UK Universities in partnership with The Open University and FutureLearn, the programme responds to University UK’s “Tackling racial harassment in higher education” report and provides you with an understanding of the origins and experience of Black British history, race, and culture, and how individuals can make a positive difference.

The programme has been developed by leading academics including Professor Marcia Wilson, Dean of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion at The Open University and includes contributions from BAFTA-award-winning film-maker David Olusoga, Shadow Secretary of State for Justice David Lammy MP, human rights activist Baroness Shami Chakrabarti, artistic director of The Young Vic Kwame Kwei-Armah, and former England goalkeeper David James MBE, among many others. The course has also been guided by a steering committee including Baroness Valerie Amos and Karen Blackett OBE. The presenter of the course is TV host and former Blue Peter presenter Ayo Akinwolere.

The course is freely available to all UK Universities for the next three years and consists of 6 hours of content (three 2-hour sessions) through a mixture of online learning content, discussion and interactive activities, completed in your own time.

Students who complete the course will be in with the chance of being awarded one of 50 Santander development grants of £500 each (T&Cs apply) and invited to take part in a live thought leadership event with high-profile ambassadors. All students will also receive a digital certificate upon completion.
