Moving in made easy

Starting student life in a new place can feel like a big leap, but with a few essentials and the right mindset, it’s your time to thrive. Student ‘MM’ from Thailand shared her top tips for settling into Birmingham student accommodation.
Q: What top three essentials should every student bring with them?
A: For me, there was not much that I felt was absolutely necessary for the room itself. But since I enjoy shopping, I would say a reusable shopping bag, a laptop, and most importantly, coffee equipment because I really need my coffee, especially for those 9am lectures.
Q: Did you do much preparation before your move to ensure it ran as smoothly as possible?
A: Yes, I think everyone should prepare before moving. I looked at maps, checked the location, and made sure I knew a bit about the area in advance just so I had my bearings before I arrived.
Q: How did you settle in and meet people when you first arrived?
A: I just stayed calm, used simple words to help me get acquainted with the language, and tried to find common interests with new friends. That really helped me connect with people.
Q: Were you nervous to move in, and if so, what tips do you have to ease those nerves?
A: Yes, of course I was a little nervous. But I reminded myself that I was going to get to enjoy a new opportunity that would benefit my future, so there was no need to worry too much. It is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to experience something new.
Q: Any final words of wisdom to someone about to move in?
A: Do not overthink it before you arrive. This is your chance to live fully and create valuable experiences.
