Things to do before you leave

It’s the end of term, meaning it’s time to say goodbye. To help, we’ve put together a handy checklist to ensure you don’t forget anything.

Please note: Some of these actions are compulsory and part of your accommodation contract

Living in partner accommodation? Make sure to follow any of their additional rules before you move out and always leave your room as you found it.

Leaving your space clean and presentable

Bedroom

  • Vacuum floor
  • Empty and clean all your wardrobes, cupboards and drawers
  • Remove all posters, stickers, Blu Tack, and sticky tape from the walls and doors
  • Ensure all rubbish has been removed and disposed of correctly
  • Switch off the light and heater
  • Close the lock your window
  • Lock your room door

Kitchen

  • Empty all cupboards and drawers
  • Remove all rubbish and glass bottles, disposing of them correctly
  • Remove all food from the fridge and freezer and dispose of it correctly. If you have non-perishable, unopened food, please see ‘Unwanted items’ below
  • Wipe kitchen surfaces and mop the floor

Additional things to do

  • Please ensure the rest of your flat, including any bathrooms/toilets are cleaned and that all rubbish is removed
  • Any unopened post in the hallway can be handed in to reception. Please remember to change your address when purchasing anything online, as we are unable to store any post. You can do this through the Royal Mail website
  • If you have a bike, please ensure it is removed from the bike stores as we are unable to store it. Any bikes left will be removed over the summer and disposed of.

Please remember to checkout via the Express Checkout tab in the Accommodation Portal.

Unwanted items

Please leave your room empty. If you can't take everything home with you, or simply haven’t got the space, then donate them. Look out for Pack-and-Pass Days for donating any unwanted clothes, shoes, accessories, books, kitchen utensils, DVDs, or small electrical items. You'll also find British Heart Foundation donation bins at the following places:

  • The Vale – Maple Bank car park, Shackleton reception and Tennis Court car park
  • Selly Oak Village – Jarratt Hall Courtyard
  • Pritchatts Park Village – Lower car park

Please note that the BHF cannot accept duvets, pillows, hangers, or broken items.

You can also do your bit to reduce food waste by donating any in-date, unopened and non-perishable food to Birmingham Food Bank. These items can be dropped off at Shackleton and Jarratt Hall receptions.

If you live at Pritchatts Park, you can donate to the Community Pantry instead.
