How do I apply for council tax exemption?
If your local council is Birmingham City Council, you will need to apply online for your student exemption. Only one member of the household is required to complete the application form. We have an agreement in place to make the process easier for students, whereby we supply the council with a list detailing all our currently registered students. This means that you do not need to supply Birmingham City Council with a Student Certificate.
When completing your application you will need to ensure you have the following details:
- The full address of your property
- The full name of each housemate
- The student ID numbers of all the students at the property
- Course start and end dates for each student
- Whether this is full or part time study
The council will check the details you provide against the list before applying any discounts to your household. For queries you can call the council on 0121 303 1113.
If your local council is any other council, you will normally be asked to complete a form, and may be asked to supply a student certificate. The council website should give you all the information you need, and we can supply the student certificate.
