External grants and scholarships

If you are unable to secure an award from the University and are in need of additional support, it is advisable to look into the grants and scholarships that are being offered by organisations outside the University. These include the following:

Idealo Scholarship for Pioneers of Tomorrow

The Idealo Scholarship for Pioneers of Tomorrow is offering 10 scholarships to students who have done amazing things with their special skill or passion to set them apart from their peers. The Scholarship is valued at £650 per month for 12 months and successful candidates will also receive coaching that is tailored to their area of speciality. To apply, you need to complete an application form and submit a short video or essay outlining your talent.

Nestpick Scholarship

The Nestpick Scholarship is offering 3 scholarships of €2,500 to help to cover rental costs, all students are eligible to apply.   To apply, you will need to create a 1-2 minute video including information on who you are and where you're from, your place of study and details on how you help your local community.

Push Doctor Medical Grant

Push Doctor are offering 3 grants worth £500 each for UK citizens studying medicine in their second year onwards attending a UK Institution.

Xero Entrepreneur Scholarship

The Entrepreneur Scholarship is sponsored by Xero, providers of online accounting software.  They are offering a UK student (undergraduate or postgraduate) a £2,000 towards a business ­related degree to help them along the road to success on their entrepreneurial journey. The successful recipient will also receive the offer of mentoring sessions, a free subscription to Xero for 12 months and financial management skills coaching with Xero senior business leaders.The application deadline is July each year.

Canon Foundation research fellowships

The Canon Foundation in Europe grants up to 15 research fellowships annually to students who have completed an MA or PhD within the last 10 years. The fellowship funds range from 22,500 Euros to 27,500 Euros. The annual closing date for applications is 15 September and they are considered over several months.

Funds for women graduates 

The Funds for Women Graduates are various different grants which are available to female postgraduate students. Awards take the form of non-renewable grants worth up to £4,000 and are awarded by the FFWG. The deadline for these grants is June for foundation grants and October for emergency grants.

Fulbright Awards 

The UK Fulbright Awards Programme offers a wide range of exchange opportunities to UK citizens in three major categories:

  • Postgraduate Student Awards for students wishing to pursue a postgraduate degree in the US in any subject;
  • Distinguished Scholars and Fellows Awards for academics and professionals to lecture, study and/or conduct research in the US;
  • Special programmes for shorts stays or for younger scholars.

 Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme

The seventh round of the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme is currently open for applications.  230 fellowships will be awarded in 2016/17 which aims to attract top international students to study in Hong Kong. Each fellowship pays a monthly stipend of HK$20,000 plus a HK$10,000 annual conference and research related travel allowance payable for three years.  Applications must be submitted by the end of November.

Leverhulme Trade Charities Trust 

This trust offers awards of up to £5,000 to postgraduate students who are resident in the UK and who are the spouse, widow, widower or child of a commercial traveller, grocer or chemist. The deadline for these awards is October each year.

 Thouron Award 

Up to 10 awards are available, covering tuition fees, health insurance and living expenses for postgraduate study from September 2016 at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia.  Applications from British Scholars should be made by the end of October.

Whitworth Scholarships

Whitworth Scholarship Awards are for prospective or current undergraduates or postgraduates of any engineering discipline who have completed a two year engineering apprenticeship. The scholarships are valued up to £18,000 (for full time study up to £4,500 per annum is available over four years, for part time study up to £3,000 per annum). The closing date for applications is 30 June each year.

The Wellcome Trust is the largest charity in the UK, and provides a range of fellowships, studentships and personal awards to postgraduate students undertaking research in the field of biomedicine.
