Some advice on the costs involved in developing mobile apps in addition to the developer time/resource for building the app.

If releasing an app that will be a core University app then this needs to be approved by the Mobile App Steering Group and the following may be required:

  • Mac Mini (an Apple device is required to develop iOS apps) – approximately £500
  • App server may be required depending on app functionality – contact your relevant IT manager for a quote.
  • Budget for app branding and promotional materials. As a guide a budget of £750 would cover design for: development of identity and icons, header graphic, home screen, splash screens, promo flyers and posters. Contact Creative Media for a quote based on your specific requirements.

If releasing an app that is an innovation/special interest app you may need to budget for:
  • Apple developer license - $99 per year 
  • Apple developer enterprise licence - $299 per year (for developing and distributing in-house iOS apps)
  • Windows developer licence – $99 per year
  • Google developer licence – $25 one-off registration fee
  • Blackberry World developer licence - free
