Doctoral researcher at Birmingham Business School wins ‘Best PhD paper’ award.

Ali Esfahbodi received a 'Best PhD paper' award for his work 'an integrated framework to assess the impact of sustainable supply chain management practices on firms performance' at the Ninth International Symposium on Global Manufacturing and China. Click for full details.

Two Economics students in ‘Three minute thesis’ finals

Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) is a research communication competition developed by the University of Queensland in 2008, in which doctoral researchers have just three minutes to deliver an engaging presentation on their thesis topic, its originality and its significance. The Birmingham 3MT competition took place on Friday 27 September in the Great Hall. Due to the number of registrations, a selection process of informal College 'heats' took place on Thursday 19 September. 4 PhD students represented the Business School at the College ‘heat’: Allan Beltran Hernandez, Bersisa Berri, Mary Dawood and Marea Sing. Marea Sing and Mary Dawood won the College ‘heat and represented the College at the final on Friday 27 September. Mary Dawood’s topic was on ’Towards An Improved Econometric Approach to Modeling an Early Warning System for Financial Crises’. Marea Sing’s topic was on ‘Structural Change, Economic Development and Macroeconomic Policy’

Marea Sing became the runner-up in the final, winning a £500 travel bursary.

Research students awarded scholarships under the Business School's research investment package and the Midlands Excellence scholarship

In addition to students who have been awarded bursaries by the Business School, Economics, ESRC and the Elite scholarship scheme, the following students have been awarded scholarships under the BBS investment package for research.

What does it mean to be sustainable? Caroline Chapain contributes to the Ideas Lab

Caroline Chapain, Lecturer at the Business School, contributes to an Ideas Lab podcast debate on ‘What does it mean to be sustainable’ chaired by Dr Yan Wong and including Nick Grayson, Climate Change and Sustainability Manager for Birmingham City Council as well as Ben Cowan from the Human Computer Interaction Centre and Dr Nicole Metje, Senior Lecturer in the School of Civil Engineering at the University of Birmingham. This debate addresses questions such as: ‘Where do we start to tackle such a global issue as sustainability, when the responsibility lies with everyone? What is the effect of more and more people living in cities? Are we adapting fast enough?’

Ideas Lab is an innovative new project funded through the Higher Education Innovation Fund supporting the production of podcast documentaries and factual series to disseminate academic research to the wider public. You can listen to the debate and post comments/remarks here.

Paul Edwards’ research graded ‘outstanding’ by ESRC

A research project involving Paul Edwards has recently been awarded an ‘outstanding’ grade by the ESRC. The project, on ‘Surveying Employment Practices of Multinationals in Comparative Context’, used matched surveys in four countries to study MNCs’ HRM practices and their links to organizational structures. Papers based on the study comprised a special issue of the Industrial and Labor Relations Review, Spring 2013.

Isabelle Szmigin recently appeared twice on BBC Midlands Today discussing Tesco being found guilty of misleading pricing practices, and on Junk food at checkouts on BBC Breakfast.
