Fancy a paddle?

On Sunday 5th June between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., the Rotary Clubs of Birmingham Breakfast and Edgbaston Convention will once again be hosting their annual Dragon Boat Race event at Edgbaston Reservoir, a delightfully bucolic setting.

In 2015 the Business School team combined both staff and students to make up a winning formula - thrashing Aston Business School by a full 10 seconds – they’re still licking their wounds….. (^j^) not that we’re gloating you understand – but fear of collecting our P45s the day after, had we failed, was inspiration enough!

For 2016, several teams from Business School postgraduate programmes are already limbering up to take up their paddles to do battle, not only against one another, but also against teams from local businesses and institutions…..so, if you’d like to take part, get in touch with Libby Robotham – Room G35 in the J G Smith Building or call (0121 41)48076 or email: e.j.robotham@bham.ac.uk

Teams consist of 10 paddlers plus a drummer (to beat out the rhythm of the paddling strokes & really adds to the competitive atmosphere) with up to four reserves. Each team races at least three times. There are medals awarded to the overall winners and also a prize for the best fancy-dressed team - this is also a great opportunity for participants to raise funds for their favourite charity through either individual or team sponsorship. Official forms are available along with more information from the Rotary Club website.

However, if you don’t fancy paddling but want to offer support to the teams, it really would be much appreciated if you would come along to do so. This is a FREE, family, fun day out and a chance to see some exceedingly competitive paddling – Olympic champions (if it but were an Olympic sport) would be envious of the determined effort exuded.

Refreshments will be available throughout the day as well as inter-race activities. Please check out next month’s newsletter for further exciting developments in the build up to this event.

In the meantime, here are a couple of photos from last year to whet your appetite!
