Gloria Barber, the Postgraduate Employer Liaison Manager from the Business School’s Careers in Business team, recently travelled to Shanghai on a joint trip with representatives from Nottingham Business School.

The purpose of the trip was to engage with key employers in the region in order to generate effective long-term relationships through which our Postgraduate students can find appropriate level employment and internships. During the visit Gloria met with representatives from several multinational companies, including Ernst & Young, Unilever, CITI Group and HSBC to discuss employment opportunities for Business School students.

Whilst in China, Gloria also hosted two events for Business School Alumni. The first was a social event for Alumni to share their experiences and business insights since leaving the University. The following evening, Gloria hosted a ‘Kick Start Your Career’ event for students who had recently returned backed to China after graduating from the Business School. The event provided advice on how to secure jobs whilst representatives from Pay Pal, KPMG, CPA Australia and Michael Page shared their insights on the Chinese job market as well as what they look for from job applications. There were also opportunities to ask questions and take part in a networking event.

“My trip to China was very enjoyable; it was wonderful to see so many Alumni during my time there. I hope that the visit will also help to forge much stronger links between the Business School and Chinese businesses, benefiting both students and Alumni in the future.” – Gloria Barber

One of the key successes of Gloria’s trip was raising the profile of the Business School and providing multi-national companies in Shanghai with a new found understanding of the School’s Programmes and, most notably, the student demographic. This will no doubt provide students with greater access to opportunities and ensure Birmingham students are considered as serious applicants for job openings in the future.
