Scholarships and Fellowships

As the academic year draws to a close, we’d like to highlight a couple of items relating to our students you might not be aware of:

Business School PhD Student Receives Prestigious Fellowship

The Economics Department is delighted to announce that one of its PhD students has been awarded a one-year Junior Fellowship from the Royal Economic Society. Shixuan Wang will receive the award for the academic year 2016-17.

Worth £9,500 per student, just 10 awards are made each year by the RES following nominations from Heads of Economics Departments in the UK. Nominees must have completed at least two years of a doctoral thesis. Successful students will attend the RES Conference and are also invited to submit a research paper to the RES Conference Programme Chair for possible inclusion in a conference session. Those awarded Fellowships submit a report to the Secretary-General of the Society at the end of the academic year.

Shixuan, who is currently working on two research projects, namely detecting multiple change points and modelling asset returns, said, “winning the RES Junior Fellowship greatly motivates me to pursue my academic dream, which is to become an Econometrician with significant contribution to both econometric theory and empirical application. My thanks go to my supervisor, Professor David Dickinson, who has provided unconditional support for my academic research.”

The RES Junior Fellowships are not only highly prestigious they are also extremely competitive and each year the Royal Economic Society receives a high number of applications. Historically they have been awarded to students from Oxbridge, LSE and UCL, which adds further testament to the quality of the students who have been awarded these prestigious fellowships.
