Caring for trees in the Green Heart

You will notice some activity in the Green Heart near to North Gate in the coming days. Sadly, we have learned that one of our Quercus Robur Oaks that was planted as part of the Green Heart landscaping project has a pest called Oak Processionary Moth. This is a damaging pest that can spread very quickly, and so the difficult decision has been made to remove six trees – the one affected tree and five others which are at risk. We are working with the Forestry Commission to manage the trees in such a way as to ensure the pest, which causes trees to die very rapidly, is contained, and doesn’t spread anywhere else. In due course, following the removal of the trees, they will of course be replaced. If you have any concerns or questions, please contact greenheart@contacts.bham.ac.uk
