Men's Health Awareness Month
November is Men’s Health Awareness month, which focuses on promoting both physical and mental wellbeing among men.
Also known as Movember, some men grow moustaches to mark the month, which aims to challenge the stigma around men’s health issues, spark conversations, and promote early detection and intervention.
It is no secret that a stigma exists regarding men’s mental health – statistics from mental healthcare provider Priory suggest 40% of men have never spoken to anyone about their mental health, meaning many individuals suffer in silence. While some men may feel embarrassed or uncomfortable talking about their mental health, the bravest thing they can do is tackle the issue before it becomes a bigger problem.
The EDI and Wellbeing Team has put together a programme of events which all staff are welcome to attend:
Prostate Cancer UK Awareness Session
The HR EDI and Wellbeing team will welcome a guest speaker from Prostate Cancer UK to talk to staff on Wednesday 1 November. While the session is now fully booked, staff can find help and information, including a risk checker, at Prostate Cancer UK.
Testicular Cancer Awareness Session
Phil Morris, the visionary behind Testicular Cancer UK, is presenting an informative and laid-back awareness and advice session. Join the free session, which is open to all University staff.
Building Emotional Fitness
Join Matt Heaven, POD’s Mental Health trainer, for a session focussed on men’s mental health and exploring the concept of building ‘emotional fitness’. Some of the stereotypes and expectations in society around how men express themselves will be discussed, and tools will be shared on developing healthy strategies and greater self-awareness on emotional fitness. Register for Building Emotional Fitness event.
Domestic Abuse Awareness
This free session is run by West Mercia Women's Aid and aims to increase understanding of domestic abuse and the forms it can take. Male staff are encouraged to attend this particular session, with booking online.
Men’s Mental Health and Routine
This webinar from Health Assured, our Employee Assistance Programme (EAP), offers insight into the importance of routine when it comes to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. To gain access, staff will need to log in using username ‘wellbeing’ and password ‘DeskTreeBowl’. This is just one of the many webinars and resources available from the EAP. All staff can use this resource 24/7.
