Professional Development Events

The Placements team will advertise any information events and workshops for College of Social Sciences students in their penultimate-year on this page.

Please note that the following events are only available to students who have opted for the module in 2026-27.

Placements and Pizza: using a self-employed opportunity towards the Professional Development Module: 13:00-14:00 Wednesday March 25 in Lecture Room 8, Arts Building.

Students don’t have to follow the usual summer placement routes like internships or volunteering. As part of the Professional Development Module (PDM), you can also use the time to shape, test, and grow your own business ideas. This option requires strong self‑discipline, so only choose it if you’re confident you can stay motivated, use the time productively, and complete the minimum 40 hours. If you’re interested in counting an independent placement toward the module, please complete our expression of interest form.

To help you explore whether this route is right for you, join us for our Placements and Pizza taster session on Wednesday 25 March 1–2pm in Lecture Room 8, Arts Building. It will be led by Vikesh Mistry (Student Entrepreneurship Officer) and you’ll learn about the support available, get practical recommendations for making the most of a self‑employed placement — and enjoy some free pizza while you’re there.
