Tell us about your mentoring experience
Hello! My name is Semilore and I'm a fourth-year medical student at the University of Birmingham and I've been very privileged to be a part of the careers mentorship scheme.
So, I've been very privileged to have Dr Andrew Vallence Owen as my mentor and it's honestly been such a great experience. I've managed to gain so much from the experience. A lot of insight into what his days are like as a healthcare leader and somebody who works in the public health care space which is something I'm quite interested in for the future and also the fact he was also a trauma and orthopaedic surgeon previously as well, which is again something I'm also interested in to take up into the future as well.
So it felt like a right partnership and it's been something I've managed to gain a lot of information, a lot of guidance into how to even path and set a goal for my future and also to achieve certain things for the future as well. Any advice for future people who may be looking at applying for this mentorship program, I would say just go for it.
It's such a big opportunity and is one that you wouldn't get in another place in another world. Another other advice is when you do get in take initiative. It is you that's gonna be learning the most at the end of the day and you're not just gaining but also try to give as well. It is also mutualistic relationship. So as much as you can gain from your mentor, you also have to give something back to the mentor as well and this makes the relationship even better.
Like I said it's been a great relationship so far, we tend to have meetings once every two weeks, once every three weeks sometimes. But overall, it works very well it fits with mine and my mentor's timetable as well and again like I said before I definitely definitely recommend this program!
