A culture change
There will be things about UK culture and ways of doing things that are different to your home country. It can therefore be difficult to know what’s ‘normal’ here. These tips should help:
- Never carry large amounts of cash
- Stop and look both ways before crossing the road, and use a pedestrian crossing if you can
- You are not expected to give money to anyone, even if they ask – just keep walking
- Keep your phone in your pocket or bag when you’re out
- Ask officials to show their identification (e.g., a ticket inspector on a bus, maintenance staff/plumber coming to fix the bathroom)
- Never share your personal information or bank details over the phone. If you receive a strange phone call, end it immediately.
- Do not leave your personal belongings unattended, even if you’re only leaving them for a few minutes
We recommend getting student travel insurance for your journey to the UK that also covers your time in Birmingham. While this isn’t a necessity, it will help protect your belongings while you’re away from home.
If you live in University accommodation, a basic level of contents insurance will be provided.
