PGR Conciliation: Support for PGRs and Supervisors
Postgraduate research can be an intense process, and disagreements between postgraduate researchers (PGRs) and supervisors may arise occasionally.
The University Graduate School has set up a PGR Conciliation programme to support PGRs and supervisors in communicating and finding resolution. If you are having problems and have not been able to overcome these on your own, whether it’s communication breakdowns, misunderstandings or conflicts, conciliation can offer support.
PGR Conciliation is a voluntary, informal and confidential process which aims to help PGRs and supervisors mutually repair and resolve issues in the relationship. A trained PGR Conciliator, drawn from the University of Birmingham staff body, leads the process, guiding and supporting both parties. Conciliators are neutral facilitators who aim to create a safe space for dialogue. Other parties can recommend PGR Conciliation to PGRs and/or their supervisors, but the request must come from either the PGR or supervisor themselves.
PGR Conciliation is a pilot project until May 2025. Our webpage below can tell you more about PGR Conciliation, such as:
