The International Student Team (IST) is open for business as usual. 

For the safety of Staff and Students we are currently not seeing students face to face however, should you wish to receive visa and immigration advice you can:

The International Student Team (IST) offer advice and guidance to all international students who are currently studying at the University of Birmingham and to recent graduates.

Who should I contact in case of an emergency while the University is closed?

Contact the University Security Services, who are open 24 hours a day.

Who should I contact for immigration advice while the University is closed?

In the event that you require urgent immigration advice over the holiday period, you may wish to contact independent legal experts. Whilst IST does not offer any recommendations please refer to the links below.

Our opening hours:

Our office is currently closed to face to face appointments. We will not see any students to discuss any matter. Please view the information below on how to contact the International Student Team.

We use an online enquiry system which enables us to communicate with staff and students and is much more interactive than an email address. 

If your query relates to immigration, please attach a scanned copy of your current visa if you are able to, so that we can advise you further. If you cannot attach a copy of your visa, please tell us what type of visa you have, when it was issued and when it is due to expire.

You can call IST to discuss your situation. We are unable to give immigration advice over the phone, but we can take your information and assess how we can support you.

If you are a member of staff, then you can call us to discuss any issues you may have, however, we recommend you contact us online, unless it is urgent.

IST triage service

As part of our service, we offer a bespoke triage service on immigration and other related issues to University of Birmingham students.

The IST triage service offers a range of personalised support for students. Depending on your situation, this may include online advice and guidance, a small group workshop with other students, or an individual appointment with an advisor. Appointments are held at our offices on: The 3rd Floor, University Center (R23 on the campus map), above Barclays bank and Spar.

To access the triage service, please:

  • Complete the online triage enquiry form.
  • Once you have completed the form, your enquiry will be reviewed by an IST advisor who will be in contact with any further actions you need to take.

Please note: if you need us to check your visa application documents, please book onto a dedicated workshop for this purpose.
