My course is six months or longer

Congratulations on your acceptance to the University of Birmingham.

If you are coming to the UK for a course that is six months or longer, you will need to be in your home country or country of residence, in order to apply for the Student Route visa to start your course in the UK.

The University of Birmingham has a Student Sponsor Licence, which permits on institution to enrol international students on a range of courses. A Student Route visa is appropriate for students that can prove their ability in English language, that have enough funds to support themselves and are able to meet the other entry requirements, under the points-based system.

Unlike a Standard Visitor visa, if you enter the UK on a Student Route visa you may be permitted to work in the UK, subject to student work restrictions, and certain students may be able apply to bring family members (student dependants). In addition it is possible, subject to restrictions, to extend a Student Route visa if you need more time to complete a course.

The UK has a points-based immigration system. Student Route visa applications require 70 points:
