Workshop description
Since the release of ChatGPT in November 2022, there has been a significant amount of commentary on the impact Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) tools will have on Higher Education, particularly in relation to teaching and learning. A much smaller focus has been on the impact GAI will have on researchers and the research cycle. Allied to this, there are now a raft of AI tools available for researchers to support specific tasks – from tools that help with discovering and reading academic literature, to those that assist with academic writing and the selection of journal venues. How does a researcher identify and evaluate these tools?
In this session, participants will develop an understanding of the opportunities and risks of using AI tools in the research process. Time will be dedicated to exploring how AI Tools might be used to augment research processes to create efficiencies, as well as critically evaluating any potential ethical risks that might be associated with using AI tools within a research context. Finally, attendees will be equipped with a framework for evaluating AI Tools, with the framework explored through the demonstration of a selection of AI Tools.
This workshop covers topics which primarily fall under domain A1 of the Researcher Development Framework.
