PG Research Festival 2026: Showcasing the innovation & impact of Birmingham Researchers

The University of Birmingham Doctoral School (UDS) is excited to announce the relaunch of the Postgraduate Research Festival this June. The 2026 programme includes an array of exciting events designed to support and celebrate outstanding postgraduate research, from careers sessions, panel events, and skills workshops.

A highlight of the Festival is the UDS Showcase on Tuesday 16 June. Open to all, this this year’s theme of ‘Impact and Innovation’ focuses on the real-world difference that research makes. From healthcare to technology and the social sciences, the UDS Showcase will highlight how innovative postgraduate research has a positive impact locally and globally. With an afternoon of activities, whether you are a current student considering postgraduate study or would like to experience exceptional postgraduate research firsthand, the UDS Showcase is your opportunity to learn more.

What to expect at the UDS Showcase

You can enjoy a public exhibition of the annual Research Poster Competition, where postgraduate researchers from all Colleges present their work. This interactive session offers a chance to ask questions, explore different disciplines, and help select the 2026 People’s Choice winner. The Research Poster Competition winners will be announced later in the day during the UDS Awards, where we will also be celebrating the winners of AM Award for Digital Scholarship, the Michael K. O’Rourke Best Publication Award, and the Award for Excellence in Doctoral Research Supervision, alongside recognition for the 2026 3 Minute Thesis finalists and winners.

The Showcase also features a range of panel events including the opening Keynote panel ‘Translating Research into Impact,’ with award‑winning academics and alumni discussing how research creates meaningful change beyond the University. The Keynote Speakers, featuring Professor Yemisi Takwoingi, Dr Alana Farrell, and Dr Tom Goodman, will also highlight the many paths available after doctoral studies. You can also expect to hear about groundbreaking research Black-led research, emphasising the critical role of representation in shaping the future of research.

To close the day, you are invited to a Drinks Reception, offering a relaxed environment to continue conversations and meet new people.

With a full schedule of events throughout June, the Festival offers something for anyone interested in research, innovation, and academic development. For further details and to register, check out the Postgraduate Research Festival events page
