Want to learn a new language? Apply for free language courses this June
Ever wanted to learn Japanese? Brush up on your French? Or try something completely new alongside your degree?
Applications for Languages for All free language courses open on Monday 8 June for the 2026/27 academic year.
Languages for All (LfA), the University’s specialist language teaching division, offers UoB students the chance to study one of nine languages for free:
- Arabic
- Chinese Mandarin
- French
- German
- Italian
- Japanese
- Portuguese
- Russian
- Spanish
The courses are a great way to build a new skill, meet people from across the University and explore different cultures while studying at UoB.
Before you apply
There are a few important things to keep in mind before applying:
- Courses are open to undergraduate and postgraduate students based on the Edgbaston campus.
- Spaces are limited and priority is given to undergraduate students.
- Applying does not guarantee you a place.
- If you get a place, you will be contacted through your UoB email during Welcome Week.
- Classes take place on campus and start in Week 1.
- Your language class will appear on your timetable, so if it clashes with your degree modules you may need to withdraw.
- Only apply if you can commit to attending throughout the full academic year.
