Have you heard of the Big Brum Build?
During Welcome Week, a group of Civil Engineering students had the challenge of building a massive scale model of our iconic clock tower. As part of the project, 15 students spent 5 days at the National Buried Infrastructure Facility (NBIF) recreating Old Joe using a large-scale stainless-steel-system.
Through teamwork, planning, project-management, and working with various tools, the students were able to gain hands-on experience during their studies. This was one of several initiatives between the university and AtkinsRéalis to help improve student employability prospects. The initiative was made possible through the Royal Academy of Engineering Visiting Professor (VP) scheme, which allowed the university to build a strong partnership with AtkinsRéalis.
Hear from the Civil Engineering students
“It was a unique and eye-opening opportunity that gave us first-hand insight into the realities of working on site. We developed our time management and problem-solving skills while tackling challenges together, as well as learning about practical construction logistics we wouldn’t normally encounter until entering the industry. We’re grateful to the technician team and everyone else who supported us and took part throughout.”
