Making an impact at UoB as an EDI Ambassador

Hi, I’m Lydia and I had the pleasure of working as Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Ambassador (EDISA) for the Careers Network this year. I applied for the role as it aligned with my passion for social mobility and creating an inclusive campus culture. Although I was unsure about getting the role with no prior experience in diversity and inclusion, I am beyond grateful that I applied.

I’ve had the most rewarding year working with the careers team to ensure that students from widening participation background have the knowledge and tools to build their network, gain work experience and access opportunities for professional development both during and after university.

Having opportunities to plan and deliver of events for EDI awareness raising on campus, such as the university’s EDI festival in partnership with the University of Amsterdam, has been incredible. These helped to develop my communication, empathy, and organisational skills, to name only a few and has left me with some amazing memories. I’ve learnt a lot about myself, and I also take huge pride in the work we have all achieved this year in making a real difference to the student community. Through these experiences I have built great relationships with my fellow EDI student ambassadors and made long-lasting friendships.

But why should you apply?

Embedding EDI takes time, and it is an understatement to say that there is still so much to be done. However, there is real drive to do better and EDI ambassadors are vital in driving change that truly matters to students. Whether it is challenging stereotypes, promoting EDI awareness, or speaking with students, your efforts as an ambassador will have a lasting impact at the university.

By becoming an ambassador, you’ll gain valuable skills in communication, organisation and leadership, and earn practical working experience in EDI that are hugely beneficial to your professional and personal development. Plus, you’ll have access to a range of exciting opportunities that will enrich your university experience.
