Keeping your inbox safer

We're committed to maintaining cutting-edge cyber security.

On 19 March, we'll introduce a new email filtering system to tackle spam, phishing attempts, ransomware, and other fraudulent messages. It will be responsible for inspecting email traffic in and out of the University, reducing potentially harmful content and providing greater protection from online threats or dangers.

How the new email filtering system works

  • The system will scan incoming and outgoing emails. If they're identified as safe, they’ll arrive in your inbox as usual.
  • Emails containing viruses, spam, or inappropriate content will be blocked.  Messages that might be valid but have been flagged will be stored in your personal email quarantine, where you can review them.
  • The URL Defence system will check if a web link inside an email is safe to click on.

If incoming emails are flagged and are moved to your quarantine, you’ll receive an email called 'The End User Digest'. This will summarise all your quarantined messages, letting you to review and release them if you mark them as safe.

Web links in emails from outside the University will also look a bit different. When you hover over a link, you’ll see ‘https://urldefense.com/v3/’ at the start. This ensures links are verified as safe. If the URL Defence system finds an issue with the link, it will either block the connection or transfer you into a protected browsing session.

The new email filtering service will replace the current Microsoft email quarantine system. These improvements ensure a higher level of security for all, keeping your inbox safer.
