Cycling at UoB: Stay Safe

Whether you are heading to a lecture, the library, or into the city, cycling is one of the easiest and most sustainable ways to travel. Before you set off, take a moment to make sure you are cycling safely and securely.

Keep your bike secure

Always lock your bike in a safe location. The University is home to over 1,000 cycle spaces and many lockable bike shelters on campus

For access instructions, email sustainabletravel@contacts.bham.ac.uk from your University email.

There is also a secure bike compound in the Sport & Fitness Centre car park, accessible to Sport & Fitness members via swipe card.

If you are living in University accommodation, lockable bike stores are available at The Vale Village and Selly Oak Village. To arrange access, drop into Shackleton reception (for The Vale Village) or Jarratt Hall reception (for Jarratt Hall and Bournbrook) for access information.

Get your FREE bike lights and D-lock

Be seen and protect your bike with our safety freebies:

  • Free bike light set – collect from Gear Up bike shop in Staff House Square. Just bring your student ID and your bike. (One set per student, while stocks last.)
  • Free D-lock – pick one up from the Community Safety Hub (open Monday–Friday, 10am–4pm) near North Gate, at the top of the Green Heart. Remember to bring your ID and your bike.

A D-lock is the most secure bike lock available if you use it correctly; all others, including cables and chains, can easily be cut by thieves.

Pro tip: remember to remove your lights when leaving your bike to keep them safe.

Register your bike

You can take part in our ‘Lock It, Mark It’ scheme by registering your bike on the National Cycle Database for free. This makes it easier to recover your bike if it is ever stolen. You can book via communitysafetyteam@contacts.bham.ac.uk or drop into the Community Safety Hub near North Gate with your bike and ID.

Ride safe around campus and the city

Your safety matters to us! Here are some quick tips to help you ride safely:

  • Always wear a helmet. It’s a simple way to protect yourself should an accident happen. You can buy one online or from any bike shop.
  • Stick to bike lanes when you can. If you’re on the road, keep an eye out for cars, pedestrians and traffic lights. Follow the road rules.
  • Be seen. Make sure you are visible to others by wearing bright clothes.
  • Remember to signal your turns with clear hand signs so people know where you’re heading.
  • During the dark and gloomy months, use front (white) and rear (red) lights and reflective gear so you are clearly visible.
