Blog: Four weeks working in Bali

Mechanical Engineering student Mahmood shares how a month-long adventure in Bali transformed his outlook.

This summer, I had the incredible opportunity to participate in the Go Global Internship Programme in Bali, an experience that has both shaped my academic and professional journey as well as enrich my personal growth. Over four weeks, I engaged myself with the Balinese culture while working with local businesses, offering fresh perspectives and innovative solutions to the challenges they faced.

Why Bali?

Bali is a destination known for its beauty, but what drew me in was the chance to work with businesses committed to sustainability. This internship was organised by Think Pacific, which connects students like me with local enterprises that aim to make a difference. From small family-run businesses to start-ups and charities, each organisation we worked with shared a common goal: making a positive impact on the environment and their communities.

My adventures week-by-week

Immersing myself in Balinese culture

The journey began in Ubud, where we stayed at the SenS Hotel for two days, participating in team-building exercises and learning about the programme's structure. This initial week was all about understanding Balinese culture and creating bonds with the other interns on the programme. From traditional Balinese craft workshops to cooking classes and cultural performances, we gained a deeper appreciation of the local heritage. We later moved to Mas Village in Ubud, where we lived with local families, offering us an experience of Balinese daily life.

Working with a sustainable tea business

In the second week, my team collaborated with Made Tea, a business focused on health and wellness through organic, sustainably sourced teas and our project was to create an international distribution plan for their products. This experience improved my market research and strategic planning skills and introduced me to the complexities of international trade and the importance of sustainable practices in business. We designed branding and marketing materials, which were met with enthusiastic feedback from the Made Tea team.

Exploring printmaking

Next, we worked with Black Hand Gang, a business promoting printmaking. This week was particularly interesting, as I had the chance to create my own prints using UV lights. Our task was to develop an exchange programme for artists, aimed at encouraging collaboration between different regions in Bali. This project required a deep understanding of cultural and artistic dynamics and it was rewarding to see how our ideas were received.

Tackling food waste

In the final week we worked with Magi Farm, a business tackling food waste through innovative solutions like the lifecycle of the Black Soldier Fly. My role was doing a competitor analysis and building a website to improve their online presence. This project emphasised the significance of digital tools in driving sustainable business practices and growing a business. The feedback from Magi Farm was positive, especially regarding the website, which they saw as a game-changer for their growth.

What I learned from my experience

This experience expanded my worldview beyond just professional skills. I developed resilience, adaptability and cultural intelligence while working with diverse teams. Living in a new culture allowed me to build meaningful relationships and grow personally and professionally.

The skills I gained in Bali will benefit my future studies and career. The program strengthened my leadership and critical thinking, preparing me for any international business environment. If you're considering studying abroad, I highly encourage you to take the leap—you'll expand your skills and gain lasting memories and friendships.

Studying or working abroad offers life-changing personal and professional growth. If you're thinking about it, just go for it! You'll gain new perspectives and the confidence to tackle any challenge.
