Think you're scam smart?

Learn how to stay safe from scammers this festive season and get one step ahead.

While the festive season is a wonderful time of year, it’s also when scammers can be most active. While the University has tight security controls some malicious emails can still slip through. Fraudsters can target anyone, anywhere, at any time. We’ve got you covered with some helpful top tips for protecting yourself and being extra cautious when checking your emails.

  • Beware of urgent requests: Phishing emails often pressure you to act quickly like ‘verify your account’ or ‘if you don’t respond within xx hours, your account will be closed’. You should never enter your personal details into a link from an email.

  • Check links before clicking: Hover over the link (or press and hold on mobile) to preview the web address. If it looks different from the visible text, it might be a phishing attempt. Stay cautious!

  • Keep your personal information private: Legitimate companies will never ask for sensitive details like your bank account, PIN, or password via email. If you're unsure, contact the company directly using the number on their official website.

  • Avoid unknown attachments: Don't open attachments from unfamiliar senders. Reputable companies like your bank, Amazon or eBay rarely send attachments.

  • Check for errors: Spelling mistakes and poor grammar can be signs of phishing.

  • When in doubt, don't engage: Avoid opening attachments or clicking links. Verify the email's authenticity through the organisation's official website.

  • Verify MFA prompts: Always ensure it was you who requested the MFA prompt before accepting it. Stay secure!
