Looking for a career mentor?
Did you know you can tap into the experience and insights of our experienced mentors, many of whom are UoB alumni?
Whether you're seeking sector-specific guidance, mentorship from a sector-leading alum, or a connection with someone who can share their lived experience as an LGBTQ+ individual, our Careers Network in partnership with our Alumni Team offer a range of tailored mentoring opportunities to support all students in their career journeys.
How do I get matched?
The process of being matched to a mentor is a simple three steps;
- Apply to the programme with an outline of what sector or support you are looking for.
- The team will match you with someone with experience in this area.
- Once matched you'll meet your mentor once a month for the next six months
Our mentors are ready to support you on your next steps towards your career, offering help in deciding your career direction, identifying the skills and experience needed for your dream job or even just the chance to access a professional perspective while you’re applying for graduate roles. You can find out more about our mentoring opportunities and their eligibility criteria below:
- Group Mentoring Programme – Foster a community together as a small group through meetings with sector leading alumni. Available to Birmingham Scholars and those in an IMD Quintile 1 neighbourhood (see the weblink for full details.)

Top tips for preparing for a mentor
- Be Clear About Your Goals: Whatever you’re looking to get out of the relationship, make sure to communicate this clearly to your mentor.
- Stay Open and Curious: Be willing to explore new ideas and learn from your mentor’s experiences.
- Take Initiative: Mentoring works best when you take ownership of the relationship.
- Reflect and Act on Feedback: Reflect on your mentor’s advice and take steps to apply it.
Still unsure about what is next, you can also find a list of dates the Mentoring team will be available for questions at Careers Corner (behind the main desk in the Library) on our Mentoring webpages.
