Commonwealth Games paid roles - Wednesday 4 May

The Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games and Worklink teams will be back on campus (Wednesday 4 May) to recruit students to paid roles as part of the 20,000 jobs campaign. Head down to the Teaching and Learning Building from 10am to 3pm to find out how you can get involved!

Campus during the Games

The Games will be taking place across Birmingham and the West Midlands from 28 July – 8 August. As an Official University Partner, the host of the Games principal Athlete’s Village, the official competition venue for hockey and squash, and a training venue for swimming and athletics, we will welcome nations, territories and athletes from across the Commonwealth to our campus on each of the 11 days of the Games.

Campus will remain fully open and operational throughout the Games. In the run up to and during the Games, we will see some temporary changes to our campus and the surrounding areas, as requested by the Games Organising Committee, to facilitate the operational and security requirements the Games has.

We do appreciate that our campus, the car parks, the surrounding areas and our transport networks will be busier than usual during this period. To ensure you are fully aware of these temporary changes, please visit our newly developed ‘Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games’ intranet pages.

These pages provide updates on:

  • The additional security measures
  • Car parking
  • Travel to and from campus (including expected peak times)
  • Spectator route – University Station to University of Birmingham Sport and Fitness (Hockey and Squash Centre)
  • Areas of campus which will have no access or restricted access
  • Road closures

We will continue to update you via these pages as we prepare our campus, and as further plans are confirmed by the Games Organising Committee and Transport for West Midlands (TfWM).

We thank you for your patience as we support bringing the Organising Committees’ exciting vision of a ‘Games for everyone’ to life.

Summer Graduation Ceremonies

Our July 2022 Graduation celebrations which will take place immediately prior to the start of the games period will also be going ahead as planned.

Any updated advice for parking and traveling to the campus for the graduations period will be made available via the graduations webpages.

Volunteering opportunities

The University is keen to celebrate staff and students who are volunteering as part of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games this summer. If you are interested in receiving exclusive updates about your role and behind the scenes insights into the University’s preparations for the Games, please join the mailing list. Signing up will also enable the University to gain an understanding of how many staff and students are volunteering and help us to demonstrate our civic commitment to the city and the wider region.

If you were unable to volunteer but are still keen to get involved, we will be in touch shortly with details of an exclusive opportunity for University staff during the summer.
