Old Joe to light up orange in solidarity with those seeking sanctuary

Together with Refugees, a coalition of 300 organisations calling for a compassionate approach to refugees, are calling on people to ‘Show your Heart’ at an iconic landmark in solidarity with those seeking sanctuary – and you can’t get more iconic than Old Joe!

The University's clock tower will light up orange on Monday 21 March (6-7pm) and members from STAR (Student Action for Refugees) and UoB Sanctuary group, who are organising the display, are asking students and staff to get involved by gathering around Old Joe in the evening wearing orange clothing and displaying orange hearts.

The orange heart represents compassion for people fleeing war and persecution. It uses the colours of the refugee nation flag (inspired by a lifebelt representing hope) used for the first ever refugee team in the 2016 Olympics.

Photos and videos will be taken and shared on social media. You too can take lots of photos and videos during the display – just make sure you use the campaign hashtags #TogetherWithRefugees and #WhoWeAre.
