Meet our new Student Content Shapers!

Introducing… our brand-new team of Student Content Shapers!

The talented group of 9 current UoB students will be creating amazing content and showcasing the UoB experience, putting the student voice at the heart of our communications. We interviewed them to find out what kind of content makes them tick, their favourite UoB memories and their top tips for current students (including why you should avoid the Vale geese!)

What are your top tips for UoB Students?

  • Find other study spaces other than the library, especially in exam season. There are so many hidden ones around campus!
  • Stay away from the geese on the vale! They are deadly!
  • Avoid Selly Oak Aldi at peak times (5-8PM)
  • A walk round big Sainsburys can fix a lot of things!

What’s your favourite memory from this year and what are you most looking forward to next year?

My favourite memory would have to be playing with the therapy dogs during the UoBe Festival in January, and I am looking forward to my graduation!

What kind of content do you like to see on social media?

I like to see food videos, baking videos and keep up to date with the latest dance trends and songs. I also like to see content on things like how to style a piece of clothing differently!

Mimi Curtis – 1st Year Modern Languages

What’s your top tip for UoB students?

Make sure to be following the university (@UniBirmingham) and Guild social accounts, as well as a few local accounts such as @bhamupdates on TikTok. It’s really helpful to find out what’s happening on campus and in the city centre.

What’s your favourite memory from this year and what are you most looking forward to next year?

I love summer on campus, and it’s nice to be able to enjoy it without any COVID restrictions. I am mostly looking forward to presenting at the BAVS (British Association of Victorian Studies) conference in September which is being held on campus for a few days, it’ll be my first in-person conference since the pandemic. There will be lots of researchers from all over attending, it’ll be great to see familiar faces and meet new people and hear all about their fascinating research!

Megan Jones – 1st Year Psychology

What’s your top tip for UoB students?

My top tips include not leaving coursework until days before the deadlines (you know you will, but take my warning), staying as organised as possible to keep on top of work and social events, and remembering to live in the moment and truly cherish these years that will soon only be fond memories. Oh, and keep coffee on hand at all times!

Isabel Clarke – 2nd Year Music

What’s your favourite memory from this year and what are you most looking forward to next year?

Getting to make music amongst my friends after a year and a half of not being able to has been so incredible, yet alone any opportunity to sing in the Elgar Concert Hall is just so special. I couldn't choose a favourite concert I've done - they've all been such fun experiences! So my favourite memory is either making music this year at UoB or probably karaoke at the first Fab 'n' Fresh of 2022 because that was such a laugh!

James Axford – 2nd Year Biomedical Science

What’s your top tip for UoB students?

My top tip is to get familiar with as many different study spaces as you can on campus, so that you know which options you have when the library is full. There are loads that literally nobody has ever heard of and are empty even on the busiest days.

Fatema Rajabali – 2nd Year Sociology

What’s your favourite memory from this year and what are you most looking forward to next year?

My favourite memory from this academic year was the charity hike I completed with my friends on behalf of Noor Orphans. Not only did we manage to raise 11k in support of the Yemeni crisis, but we also managed to get stuck in the middle of nowhere for three hours (our coach broke down). It was incredibly chaotic but one of the funniest memories ever. Next year, I’m looking forward to making the most of my uni experience, as it will be my last year. I would like to attend more socials and get as involved as possible in societies.
