Six months to go to the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games!

The countdown to the biggest sporting event of the year is on. Here’s what you need to know for now…

By now you are probably all aware of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games taking place this summer, right here in Brum. It will be the biggest multi-sport event to be held in the UK since the London 2012 Olympics and the largest event ever to be held in the West Midlands region.

Officially beginning on 28 July with a spectacular Opening Ceremony at the newly transformed Alexander Stadium, the Games is expected to attract more than 4,500 athletes from 72 nations and territories who’ll take part in 19 different sports and eight Para sports.

With some of the world’s best athletes already selected to compete at this prestigious event, it’s no surprise that more than one million spectators (including some of you lucky lot!) are set to attend.

Did you know that the University of Birmingham is an Official Partner of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, and has signed the most comprehensive university partnership agreement in the history of the Games?

As a result, the University of Birmingham is:

  • an official competition venue for hockey and squash,
  • a Tier 1 partner, the principal / largest Athletes’ Village during the Games,
  • the official catering provider for athletes, spectators, Games family and workforce
  • and a training venue for athletics and swimming -

…So this will be an incredibly exciting time on campus!

Get set for the Games

Birmingham 2022 and Games Partners have launched the ‘Get Set for the Games’ campaign, which will provide useful information for businesses and residents, to help ensure the region is ready to welcome a huge influx of visitors from around the UK and the world this summer. If you’re around campus or in Birmingham this summer, keep an eye on the website as well as our comms channels for the most up-to-date information about the impact of the Games. Apply for the Alumni Impact Fund

Are you planning an exciting activity during this summer’s Commonwealth Games in Birmingham? The Alumni Impact Fund is looking to fund engaging activities that provide students with once-in-a-lifetime experiences, bringing together local and global communities. This could be a dance routine on campus, a cultural workshop in the city centre, or radio broadcasting from the athlete’s village- think big! For more information, visit the Alumni Impact Fund page.
