Maya's Story

I’m delighted to share my experience as a postgraduate researcher at the University of Birmingham. One of the most important and memorable experiences was taking part in the Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition. It was a unique challenge that pushed me to communicate years of complex research in just three minutes, in a way that was engaging and accessible to a general audience. This experience was invaluable for developing my public speaking skills and learning how to stay concise under time pressure. The competitive aspect allowed me to connect with fellow researchers across disciplines thus expanding my network.

Another highlight was my involvement in the PGR Research Festival, where I worked with the team to prepare the keynote lecture and plan logistics. I was also involved in organising and running the oral presentation sessions for PGRs. This experience gave me a deeper appreciation for the collaboration and attention to detail required to deliver a successful academic event.

As a PGR within UoB, I have greatly valued the support of the University Doctoral School (UDS). Being selected as a UDS Scholar allowed me to work closely with the UDS team, contribute to initiatives, and help foster a stronger sense of community among researchers. One of my favourite contributions was organising the Film Club, which offered a relaxed, social space for PGRs to connect beyond their research and build friendships.

I am also an international postgraduate researcher, which has added a unique dimension to my journey. Moving to the UK to pursue my PhD was both exciting and challenging, but UoB’s welcoming environment, cultural diversity, and strong international community have made the transition enriching and rewarding. I’ve been able to share my culture, learn from others, and feel part of a truly global academic network.

Overall, my journey at UoB has been shaped not only by my research, but also by these opportunities to develop skills, build connections, and contribute to the vibrant postgraduate community. I’m grateful to be part of this institution and proud to have played an active role in its PGR activities.
