Seun's PGR Story

Hi, I’m Seun, a postgraduate research student at the University of Birmingham.

In preparation for my studies, I had a lot to do and a wealth of information to digest. Fortunately, the welcome and induction activities on the PGR intranet page greatly eased my transition into academic life and directed me to the relevant teams for any questions or support I needed.

When I began my research journey, one of the key questions I had was about my career options with a PhD. Consulting with a PGR -specific careers adviser helped me understand the wide range of post-PGR career options. They also assisted me in narrowing down my choices based on my skills as a researcher.

Being on the university campus feels like being in an entirely different city. Personally, because of the many spacious green areas across campus, which create a peaceful environment for me to study in. Additionally, having a train station on campus makes commuting to the Birmingham city centre  a lot more convenient.

Pursuing a research-orientated degree has sometimes felt a bit overwhelming and isolating given the independence, but throughout the previous academic year, there have numerous informal social events for PGRs that gave me great opportunities to meet new people and build a sense of community.
