Our approach

Educational Enterprise is a digital product development team with a remit to lead the development of the University’s online teaching portfolio. The team apply their expertise of user experience (UX) in learning design to their approach when developing online courses whilst also identifying opportunities for business development working closely with the market insights team.

Educational Enterprise works with academic and professional services staff from across the University’s five Colleges and central services on the development of online and blended learning programmes, advising you on the benefits and challenges of working with a partner to deliver a programme. EE are the contract holder for the University’s relationship with FutureLearn and Wiley Global Education Services and can also advise on when it is appropriate to work with partners, business models, and procurement in choosing a partner and different service allocation models.

How we support you

  • Support planning a new programme, including business case development where appropriate
  • Advice and estimates in calculating the costs of programme development and delivery
  • Support in assessing the market opportunity of new business areas
  • Advise in best practice in online programme design
  • Designing and building online courses in Virtual Learning Environments (VLE's)
  • Designing and implementing, design process and design systems, for online users
  • Offering an understanding of how online programmes can work within the standard University systems and process
  • Help and support in choosing a delivery partner, where appropriate, to work with to develop and deliver content
  • Support and advice submitting online and blended programme proposals to the University’s programme approval committee (PARC).
  • Educational Enterprise can facilitate cross-college proposals and development opportunities

Meet the Team

Kabir Ganguly - Head of Educational Enterprise

Responsibilities:

  • Work in partnership with academic colleagues and partner organisations to develop a portfolio of online degrees and microcredential courses
  • Maximise the learning opportunities that can be derived from the virtual and physical learning environments available
  • Identify and embrace opportunities for collaboration with other projects and initiatives across the University
  • Analyse usage patterns and underlying data to inform future development and delivery
  • Work with colleagues and partner organisations to identify market opportunities for portfolio growth and development

 Kabir has led digital marketing teams, digital product development teams and digital learning design teams throughout his career. Within these roles Kabir has had to conduct ideation, testing, user research and data analysis to understand how a new digital features work best for users. In addition, Kabir has held responsibility for monitoring service performance versus service levels, service delivery issues, service risks and service implementation. Reviewing the procedures and processes used by the Supplier and Customer as set out in the Contract (or otherwise agreed), identify any upstream (IT) issues that may impact the delivery of product launches.     

Elizabeth Cook - Portfolio Officer

Responsibilities:

  • Reporting on distance learning programmes.
  • Supporting the portfolio of DL programmes.

Liz joined the EE team in November 2021, initially on a 6-month secondment, which was later made permanent. Prior to this role she worked for the university in a variety of areas and departments, including in the colleges of MDS and CAL, in admin, research support and teaching roles. Her background is in research and research impact: she has a PhD in English Literature which she completed here at Birmingham in 2019, and then went on to work on REF impact case studies for the School of History and Cultures for 2.5 years.

Matt Edwards - Learning Designer

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborating with academic and professional service colleagues to design and develop a range of digital learning resources 
  • Creating innovative digital learning materials (including video, graphics and interactive experiences) 
  • Designing and building online courses in Virtual Learning Environments (VLE's) 
  • Designing and implementing, design process and design systems, for online users 

Matt is an experienced creative and digital expert with over 15 years of experience in designing and implementing high-profile digital and multimedia solutions. Passionate about user experience and user-centred design, Matt brings these skill sets alongside design process and methodology planning, to create distinctive high quality and innovative online learning experiences. 

Helen Brown - Learning Designer

Responsibilities: 

  • Working in partnership with academic and professional services colleagues to design and develop a range of innovative digital learning resources 
  • Creating digital learning materials (including video, graphics and interactive experiences) 
  • Building courses in digital learning platforms  

Helen is passionate about online learning and believes that well-designed resources can break down barriers to education and widen participation. After working in video production for several years, Helen has a particular interest in how audio-visual content can be used in an educational context. Before this role, Helen worked in the Higher Education Futures Institute (HEFi) creating digital learning resources for campus-based courses. 

David Baker - Junior Learning Designer

Responsibilities: 

  • Collaborating with academic and professional service colleagues to design and develop a range of digital learning resources 
  • Creating innovative digital learning materials (including video, graphics and interactive experiences)
  • Assisting the Learning Designers with the development of online courses and programmes 

David's areas of expertise include video editing, animation, Articulate Storyline, and the development of Short Courses.

Prior to this role, he previously worked for a Learning & Development team within a financial services company, designing compliance-based e-learning and managing the company’s Learning Management System.
