The LES Student Leadership Academy Awards 2019 Categories and Criteria

The following criteria are indicative and provided as a guideline. When nominating a student/society, please use the information below as a guide rather than a restrictive definition. Please provide as much information as possible and utilise specific examples. We welcome you to make as many nominations as you wish, and nominations for the same student/society for different awards- and like-wise for different students/societies for the same award- are also welcomed.

Who can be nominated for this award?

Outstanding Rep Contribution

 

The short-listing panel will consider collective nominations of Reps from the other categories to decide the winner for this category, so nominations are not invited for this particular award. An extra committed Rep, the winner of this award will be assertive in meetings and engage fully in discussions with staff both within and outside of meetings. This Rep will regularly raise student issues and will have gone ‘above and beyond’ the standard Rep role and will have made a significant impact in their Rep role.

Best New Rep

An active Rep despite being new to the role, the winner of this award will be an individual who is assertive in meetings, deals with student issues effectively and has good communications with their student group and staff. A Rep who is happy to go ‘above and beyond’ the standard Rep role and has had a significant impact in their role.

Best Returning Rep

A highly committed Rep, this award will be presented to an individual who is assertive in meetings, deals with student issues effectively and has good communications with their student group. They demonstrate leadership skills and set a good example for their fellow Reps. They have built on their previous experience in their role to develop excellent relationships, go ‘above and beyond’ the standard Rep role and have the confidence to challenge the status quo where appropriate.

Collaboration Award

 

 

This is awarded to two or more students/societies who have worked together this year to achieve a desired outcome, resulting in an improved experience for students. This could include, for example, collaboration between an E&D Champion and a society to put on an event aimed at a specific demographic of students, or a number of Reps to represent a cohort of students. This award recognises effective team work between- and celebrates the community of- active students and societies within the College of Life & Environmental Sciences.

‘Family Scheme’ Parent

Lasting Impact Award

This award will be presented to a student or society who has accomplished a significant change or achievement for the student body, with a lasting impact to improve the student experience for years to come. This could include, for example, setting up a scheme, influencing policy or increasing how students’ needs and views feed into decision-making at the University.

PASS Leader of the Year

This award recognises an exceptional PASS Leader who has gone to significant efforts to assist fellow students with their learning. The winner of this award will have shown dedication to their role, excellent communication skills and considerable inter-personal skills, achieving a tangible difference for students who have sought their support.

Family Scheme Parent of the Year

This award recognises a Family Scheme Parent who has provided exceptional support to their family, to help them navigate their course and wider student experience. Whether this involves signposting to essential student support services, providing guidance regarding the course or simply helping to integrate students into the social side of University, the winner of this award will have made a significant impact on the experience of their family.

Society Activity of the Year

This award recognises a society-run activity which has significantly improved the student experience within their School or department. This could include, for example, social, employability or academic-related activities, and whilst small-scale activities are also eligible, the activity must demonstrate a significant positive impact on students.

BIFoR Volunteer of the Year

The winner of this award will have volunteered a significant amount of time to assist with BIFOR research and activity. This volunteer will have demonstrated commitment, reliability and a high standard of work in their role.

E&D Champion of the Year

The winner of this award will have demonstrated particular dedication to furthering the E&D agenda within the College/their School and helped to develop a culture of best practice which fully supports the principles of Equality and Diversity. They will have been a reliable and approachable point of contact for fellow-students and may have represented students to their School/College or run E&D related activities or events for the benefit of the student body within their School and College.

After nominations close, a shortlisting panel will consider nominations and select the winners for each category. The winners will be announced at the LES Student Leadership Academy Awards event after the Easter break and results will be published within schools shortly afterwards.
