Research grants success at Birmingham: Awards up by 55%
The University’s research awards have risen from £93 million in 2010/11 to £145 million this year, a jump of over 55%.
New grants awarded to the University by Research Councils have risen by 80%, grants from government departments have doubled, and awards from overseas organisations and industry have trebled.
All five Colleges have seen success in their grant bids. The College of Medical and Dental Sciences has seen a rise from £51 million last year, to £75 million this year, the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences from £20 million to £34 million and the College of Arts and Law has more than doubled its research grant capture with an increase from £3 million to £7 million.
Professor David Eastwood, Vice-Chancellor, said: ‘Our academic community has been more successful than ever in winning new research awards which will enhance our capacity to deliver high quality research. He continued: ‘ The external environment for research funding is extremely competitive at the moment, and this success will stand us in good stead in the next few years and has laid an outstanding foundation for our future.’
