Get involved with UoB Xtra - events open to staff

You are invited to join UoB Xtra - starting today (Monday 3 June) and running to Friday 21 June, we are delighted to share that many events are free and open for staff to attend.

UoB Xtra is designed to celebrate the end of summer term, helping students destress from the pressures of assessments and revision, connect with others and learn new skills.

We've rounded up the events that are open to both staff and students. So whether you’re interested in the open air cinema or intrigued to listen to TEDx-style talks from academics here at Birmingham, there is something for everyone.

Open Air Cinema - Monday 3 June to Friday 7 June

Unwind with your colleagues after work and make the most of the food vans selling popcorn and hotdogs. Expect comedy, action, animation blockbusters from the week-long open air cinema.

See the schedule of films being shown from 15:00-21:00 each day, and the best part is that it is completely free.

3k Your Way – Wednesday 5 June, 12:00-16:00

The Campus 3k is a highlight of UoB Xtra, with students and staff coming together to promote active wellbeing. It doesn’t matter if you’re donning your trainers for the first time, a seasoned runner, or simply taking a stroll with your colleagues – it is open to all abilities, and anything goes!

You can sign up for free until Tuesday 4 June at 17:00 - the community spirit and fancy dress is not one to miss.

Please note, to safely hold this event we will be temporarily pausing access to the University Ring Road and connecting car parks from 13:30 to 15:00. During these times you will not be able to access the roads marked on the event route map found on the Campus 3k your way webpage. The page has a list of recommended car parks to use should you need to access your vehicle to leave campus during these times.

Green Week – Monday 10 June to Friday 14 June

Join our week-long celebration of nature! Taste the food of the future, gain cycling skills, and play your part as a citizen scientist. Explore a sustainable plastics exhibition, take a biodiversity course and join a climate change workshop.

Green Week showcases the variety of sustainable initiatives taking place at University of Birmingham.

See the full list of events, which are free and open for all staff to attend.

TEDx-style talks – Wednesday 12 June

The Teaching and Learning building will be hosting a series of TEDx-style talks from 9.30 to 16:00. Get answers to the big questions in these 'Ten Talks' from University academics and well-known speakers including Sir Anthony Seldon, Hannah England and Nazir Afzal OBE.

Topics will range from corporate digital responsibility to combating the threat of infectious diseases, and exploring past societies and climate change.

Whether you want to sign up for just one session or all three, it is open to all staff and is a fantastic opportunity to get involved on the debate.
