Elicia Maxwell's student story

Former Law Undergraduate

Elicia M photoI studied International Law and Globalisation prior to my application for the graduate internship. My internship was within the Registry department, and I was part of the Student Conduct Complaints and Appeals Team.

Interning in this department enabled me to develop a variety of transferable skills including project management, research and technology. Learning about the Universities policies and procedures provided me with a different perspective to the lens seen as a student. It was helpful to see a legal case and the work completed with legal parties throughout my time. A task of project management was assigned to me where I created a site for document keeping and access. I visually created an accessible site to be used by others in the University, evaluating what documents and files are essential to be used, and creating an explanatory document to explain the process.

After my internship finished I had one month off before starting a role in HM Prison and Probation Service. One thing I will apply from my internship to my current role is the constant development of learning through research. Learning and adapting various ways that I understand context before it is being rephrased. In both the internship and job role it is important to do so for policies, procedures, and complex ideas. This is also an essential skill required to become a barrister.
