Emily Kuhn's student story

Former Psychology Undergraduate

EmilyK-photoAfter completing my Internship, I got a job within the LES Student Hub as a Senior Education Support Administrator for Biosciences for Years 3 and 4. This was a fixed term contract for a year to cover a secondment within the team. Half way through my term contract, a permanent contract came up in my office within a different team, the School of Psychology. I successfully applied and secured this permanent role. I am now a Postgraduate Senior Education Support Administrator within the School of Psychology for the Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Diploma award and the upcoming Distance Learning Mental Health Programme. The internship shaped my career by allowing me to get an insight into the behind-the-scenes, inner workings of the University that I did not know existed when I was a student. While I had a couple of part time jobs during my degree, I didn’t have any experience of working in a full time job before getting onto the internship. As such, my work experience within Higher Education from the internship, coupled with my experience of being a recent Psychology student within the University of Birmingham set me up for the career that I am currently on. Furthermore, I gained valuable insight and guidance from my line manager on the internship, who looked through applications for me and set up key networking opportunities with people currently in the roles I was applying for, to gain knowledge of those roles and expand my network.
